Enjoyment of pottery is a tactile experience as well as a visual one. This makes it hard to fully appreciate pottery online. One way to show touch is to exaggerate the texture on the pot so that it jumps off your screen. This also has the effect of creating a new tactile feel in person too.
I have long been interested in fluting and the different aspects of surface manipulation. Normally I would take the opportunity of an overly thick bowl or cup and cut away clay to use the thickness to my advantage. They were all happy accidents. Recently I started making my bowls extra thick because I wanted to explore this surface decoration further.
I chose the shape of a tea bowl because it is right size to hold with two hands. It is just right pick up and feel the light prick of sharp edges on your palms and fingers. You can also press it to your lips and feel the smooth texture of the rim. I will be making many more of these as well as a 100 bowl series. So stay tuned and write me if you have any questions.
